Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran said the government is ensuring all measures to prevent or mitigate problems that may arise amid the ongoing northeast monsoon season.

Addressing the media in Chennai Thursday, the senior DMK minister said in the last one month, 101.8 mm of rainfall was recorded, which is 43 per cent less than the average seasonal rainfall.

He added that preventive measures have been initiated in the coastal areas and across the state. “As many as 4,967 relief centres (marriage halls, schools, colleges and community halls) have been identified and kept ready,” he said.

He added that in Chennai, they have operationalised 15 monitoring offices for each zone in the city so that officials can immediately visit an affected area to resolve issues. “Measures have also been taken to prevent flooding in the 22 subways in Chennai,” Ramachandran said.

“As far as Chennai Corporation (GCC) is concerned, a total of 169 relief centres and 260 motors (to pump out water during stagnation) have been kept ready,” the minister said.

As a part of preventive measures in other districts, including Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Coimbatore and Tiruchirapalli, 12 groups of the state disaster response forces have been kept ready for relief measures. The national disaster response force has also been kept on alert in Arakkonam and Chennai.
