A man was attacked and his third wife and 83-year-old father were killed by his two sons in the Bhognipur area of Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district as they disapproved of their 62-year-old father’s third marriage, police said Friday.

The accused, Lalit Dwivedi (42) and Akshat (20), are Vimal Dwivedi’s sons from his first and second marriages, respectively. They were unhappy about Vimal’s third marriage, with Kushbhoo Awasthi, the police said, adding that the duo killed their grandfather Ram Prakash because he was supportive of their father, a retired government teacher.

According to the police, a local resident went to Ram Prakash’s house and found him and the two others lying in a pool of blood on Thursday morning. When the police took the victims to hospital, Ram Prakash and Kushboo Awasthi were declared brought dead. Vimal Dwivedi, who sustained critical injuries on his head, was sent to Kanpur for treatment.

The police said that Vimal married Munni Devi a few years after his first wife died in the 1990s. “Around a year ago Vimal Dwivedi started a relationship with Kushboo Awasthi. Around two months ago he married Kushboo at a local court and took her home, leading to a dispute in the family. Family members were also angry with him for spending his savings including retirement benefits on Kushboo,” said a police officer.

According to the police, on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, the brothers attacked their father, stepmother and grandfather with a sharp-edged weapon when they were asleep. Munni Devi was not present at the house at the time of the incident.

Kanpur Rural SSP BBGTS Murthy said the accused were arrested while trying to flee from the area. They will be produced in a local court on Friday, he added.
